TEAC VRDS-701 CD player is a high end hi-fi unit featuring TEAC’s Vibration Free Rigid Disc Clamping System (VRDS). This is designed to isolate the mechanism from vibration caused by the spinning disc. There is also a specially designed bridge that both isolates the mechanism from the chassis and prevents any external vibrations from upsetting playback.
Additionally, the entire chassis is placed on a semi-floating mount. The DAC uses custom TEAC programming for a wide and clear sound. Additionally, for the best possible channel separation, a dual mono design is used. There are also two power supplies, that use toroidal transformers.
Other features include a built-in high precision volume control and a USB connection for the playback of hi-res files, from your computer.
New VRDS mechanism
TEAC Drives are used for professional and broadcast applications. To this has been added the Vibration Free Rigid Disc Clamping system. The mechanism of the VRDS-701, reduces vibration caused by the rotation of the disc itself. It also damps any mechanical vibration. This is achieved by clamping the disc to an aluminium turntable. The turntable is the same size as a CD and has a high inertial mass. The extra mass tends to resist any speed variations. Moreover, good clamping of the disc reduces disc warping. As a result, the servo does not have to work as hard, improving the accuracy of the optical tracking. The result is less jitter and less reading errors.
Torus bridge section
The next part of the mechanism is the bridge. This supports the turntable and is made of lightweight materials. The material does not transmit vibration, resulting in a wide and dynamic sound. Furthermore, the bridge is torus shaped and only fixed on one side. This isolates the turntable, suppressing any vibration transmission.
Semi floating mounting
Finally, the entire transport is mounted on the sub-chassis, in a semi-floating state. This has the advantage of controlling the transmission of vibration from the spinning disc to the chassis. The result is a natural sound throughout the frequency range. Moreover, the mechanism is also protected from external knocks and vibrations.
TEAC custom DAC
The TEAC VRDS-701 uses a proprietary DAC design, using Delta Sigma processing and analogue filters. This provides a wide sound field as well as a smoother cleaner sound. The DAC is critical for producing the best sound, and the discrete circuit structure also uses custom programming for the FPGA (field Programable Grid Array)
What is Delta Sigma and DSD?
Direct stream Digital (DSD) is an efficient coding method, originally used for archiving recordings. It Is a high resolution format and is used for SACD. With the VRDS-701, DSD signals are left as is, while the PCM signal from a CD, is Delta Sigma converted to 1 bit. Notably, DSD uses 1 Bit encoding so the CD signal is effectively upconverted. This means that DSD at 22.5Mhz can be played, as well as PCM at 32-bit / 384kHz.
Dual mono structure
The VRDS-701 uses an indulgent dual mono design. Two circuit boards are used and the entire signal path for both channels is kept separate. That includes the power supply, that has two toroidal transformers. Moreover, the design prevents any crosstalk between channels. The sound is wide and gives a greater perception of depth and space. Finally, the signal path is fully balanced at all stages.
Quad Volume Control System (QVDS)
Due to the Quad Volume Control System the VRDS-702 can be directly connected to a power amplifier, without needing a preamp. That is because the output gain or volume can be set internally using a balanced variable gain amp. This is an electronic control, that prevents ‘gang errors’ that is mis-tracking of the channel levels, caused if a potentiometer is being used. It gives very precise control of the volume.
Computer audio transfer
The VRDS-701 has a USB input that can be connected to a MAC or PC. This means that external files can be played. Such as DSD up to 22.5Mhz and PCM at 32-bit / 364kHz resolution. TEAC provide free dedicated software to do this. As a result, you can use the built-in hi-end DAC for much better quality playback than the PC can provide.
